Welcome to Watertown South Dakota, county seat of Codington County and
located in Northeastern South Dakota. The story of Watertown South
Dakota, with its homes, office buildings, government buildings,
businesses and industries, would be incomplete without the
agricultural empire of Northeast South Dakota and Western Minnesota.
The farmers and cattlemen in the area play a key in our economy.
Watertown, known as the "South Dakota's Rising Star," was
incorporated in 1879 and has a population of approximately 20,000.
The progressive city is the trade center for approximately 100,000
people and is located north of Sioux Falls and west of Minneapolis
and St. Paul. In South Dakota there is no income tax, personal
property or inventory tax.
State governmental operations are
supported by a percentage sale tax and excise tax. Local governments
are supported based upon real estate and sales tax.
Watertown has a sales tax of two
percent. Codington County is the local property tax authority. The
county taxes are real estate based.
